An exceptional technical accountant, Alex is the Burgess Hodgson Money Laundering Compliance Officer and Data Protection Officer.

Alex leads our Bookkeeping and Management Accounts team giving him a strong practical understanding of management systems.  He also undertakes audits including a UK parent company of a large international group.

Alastair Mannings is a Senior Associate with expertise in VAT advisory, financial management, reporting, forecasting, and financial modelling, with a specialisation in the construction and care sectors. Known for his ability to analyse and advise on current management information, Alastair helps businesses make informed, quick decisions while ensuring a comprehensive understanding of their financial position. He oversees and trains Alex Baker and Richard Stewart’s team, managing Richard’s larger cases and driving strategic financial solutions.

Andrew is Burgess Hodgson’s Senior Statutory Auditor, thereby taking responsibility for the quality control of our audits.

Andrew has embraced the recent evolution of auditing, implementing increasing use of technology where appropriate without losing sight of the fundamentals.

Andrew’s audits always close with a report to the directors which highlights practical opportunities for more efficient and effective controls.

Andrew acts as FD for Burgess Hodgson, so is particularly used to his accounts needing to stand up to scrutiny.

Andrew has been at Burgess Hodgson for 40 years and has always specialised in preparing management accounts and providing advice based on their results.  This has included acting as fractional FD for a FTSE-listed company and a series of venture capital subsidiaries.

Ben is well-known in the Fintech and wider tech space, having worked closely with national brands creating and evolving their management reporting systems including developing internal accounting departments.

Ben also works as a fractional CFO for a number of clients, with his team providing a fully outsourced accounting function.

Cathryn joined Burgess Hodgson in June 2000, qualified as a chartered accountant in 2003 and has been involved in all areas of the firm.  This has included: setting up reporting for UHNW family office; software integration for the implementation of data input automation; cold file reviews of the firm’s statutory audits; statutory compliance for complex multi-step transactions.  If there’s a peculiar technical job that needs to be done precisely, it always ends up being picked up by Cathryn.

Colin is Burgess Hodgson’s Managing Partner, demonstrating the partners’ trust in his broad technical expertise and practical implementation of business best practices.

Colin has 35 years of experience that has included leading audits for a FTSE-listed company.  His focus now is taking entrepreneurs through the business life cycle.  This has included the growth through to sale of nationally recognised businesses.

Dion is the Burgess Hodgson expert in taxation for professional athletes.  He provides a bespoke service in this sector, cognisant of the impact on planning of individual circumstances.

Dion also acts as fractional FD for a number of companies across varying industries, with his team acting as an outsourced accounting function.

Dominic Wood provides expert accounts and audit assistance to businesses of all sizes, from start-ups to multimillion-pound corporates. Dominic acts as a fractional CFO/ finance manager for companies that use BH as an external finance department. He is also the go to for OMBs looking to thrive, providing expert tailored services in management accounts, VAT, taxation, and ongoing support.

Emily Fairburn is an experienced provider of Corporate Governance and Company Secretarial services, including Board restructuring and ownership reorganization for Companies and LLPs. Her expertise shines in her work with Company Ownership Restructures, where she thrives in navigating complex corporate transformations.

Emily currently oversees the Company Secretarial services for an impressive portfolio of 3,000 clients, demonstrating both her leadership and commitment to excellence in corporate governance.

Fiona is Head of Personal Tax in Burgess Hodgson, overseeing the submission of 4,500 tax returns per year, whilst undertaking a particularly complex portfolio.

Fiona manages to do this alongside tax planning and technical tax advisory work, particularly around residency and high-growth tax incentives such as EIS, SEIS and EMIs, both in designing the schemes and reporting the tax for the companies, investors and employees.

Gemma has been a key member of the tax team at Burgess Hodgson since 2006. Historically she has specialised in the healthcare sector, particularly with general practitioners and consultants, but more recently has added farming clients to her portfolio. She excels at building strong relationships, helping clients achieve their financial goals through effective tax planning, including Inheritance and Capital Gains tax strategies. As a senior associate, Gemma supports the team, handles complex cases, and delivers high-level service with meticulous attention to detail. Her promotion to senior associate in 2019 reflects her dedication and leadership in both client service and team development.

Greig has led IT strategy at Burgess Hodgson since 2007, helping the firm stay connected, secure, and future-ready. With over 30 years in the industry, he brings experience from sole traders to global infrastructure rollouts. His focus includes virtualisation, cloud, cybersecurity, and AI.

Hannah is an exceptional communicator who tailors her approach to each client, ensuring the best solution for their unique needs. Believing that “one size doesn’t fit all,” she adapts her strategies to deliver optimal results. Promoted to Associate in 2023, Hannah now leads a team, using her people skills to create a positive, supportive environment for everyone, from trainees to qualified professionals.

James specialises in building strong client relationships and supporting businesses and individuals through every stage of their journey. With a hands-on, personalised approach, he helps shape ongoing business strategies and proactive tax planning.

James is skilled at identifying key challenges and implementing tailored solutions, as demonstrated by his success in turning around a client facing financial losses. Through detailed analysis, strategic forecasting, and actionable insights, he not only stabilised the business but also set it on a path to sustainable growth and profitability.

James joined Burgess Hodgson in 2018 and specialises in Research and Development (R&D) tax credits and the taxation of cryptocurrency. Known for his close client relationships and in-depth business understanding, James is the go-to expert for clients making life-changing decisions and ensuring they navigate the tax implications effectively. James’s business acumen has helped generate over £1m in repayable tax credits, guiding companies through the process and even supporting them up to their eventual sale.

With deep expertise across a broad spectrum of direct tax matters, Jayne Dixon provides strategic advice on everything from residence and pension planning to complex business takeovers and earnouts. Known for her approachable style and meticulous attention to detail, Jayne brings a multi-perspective approach to tax—ensuring clients receive well rounded solutions that stand up to scrutiny.

Ken is a nationally recognised award-winning tax expert.

Ken has a special interest in anything difficult, from complex corporate finance, fund-raising, flotation, stock exchange, and public to private takeover.

As well helping clients, Ken also works across the practice providing advice and guidance to the partners on their most technical issues.

Kenton runs the Burgess Hodgson Forensic Accounting department and has extensive experience in preparing reports for and giving evidence under cross examination in the criminal and civil courts.

By necessity, given his department, Kenton is a brilliantly technical and precise accountant, which has proved critical when reporting financial results to companies with many shareholders – especially when there is friction between stakeholders.

Mark is our non-executive chairman, having joined at the time of our investment from Abry Partners. Mark is an experienced corporate finance adviser, having spent 20 years as a partner at Deloitt,e where much of his focus was on the SME space, latterly as Global Leader of Corporate Finance.

Mark is currently a board member of the Institute of Directors and a past chairman of the ICAEW Corporate Finance Faculty. He is passionate about serving clients, providing independent advice, and developing people, all of which makes him a welcome addition to Burgess Hodgson.

Martin has a huge enthusiasm for technology – both being engaged by clients in the tech sector and advising on latest software for simplifying accounting compliance.

This has resulted in Martin and his team acting as the finance function for SMEs throughout the country, with Martin acting as fractional FD for many of these engagements.

Matt Jones is the Burgess Hodgson expert in the preparation of financial accounts and the audits of pension schemes and charities.  In addition, Matt maintains a mixed-industry portfolio of SME clients for whom he produces regular, swift, and focussed management information.

Mike has now been at Burgess Hodgson for almost 40 years, and his comprehension and interpretation of both tax law and HMRC manuals have proved an invaluable resource for the practice.

Celebrating 20 years at BH this year, Nicola joined Burgess Hodgson straight from A-levels, and was promoted to Associate in 2023. Organised and meticulous, Nicola is always looking ahead, spotting potential challenges and solving them before they arise. She has played a key role in preparing for the mandatory roll-out of Payrolling of Benefits in Kind and Making Tax Digital for income tax, showcasing her technical expertise in the evolving tax landscape

Ollie manages a diverse portfolio, advising everything from £100k local businesses to £40m turnover groups and high-net-worth individuals. Ollie goes beyond compliance, and offers forward-thinking tax advice, financial planning, and analysis support. Robert also runs our outsourced payroll department, overseeing 20,000 payslips pcm, including technical payrolls such as School Academies, and temp to perm recruitment agencies.

Rod is Burgess Hodgson’s QPRT (Qualified Person Responsible for Training) and thereby runs the firm’s 80 trainees.

Rod runs weekly technical updates for the Burgess Hodgson qualified staff and partners, inevitably meaning his technical knowledge is also up to date.  He uses this extensive expertise in advising entrepreneurs across all sectors.

Simon acts as Burgess Hodgson’s FC, exhibiting his practical implementation of internal reporting systems.  This is a role Simon has undertaken for clients since he joined the practice over 20 years ago.

Simon is also the Burgess Hodgson healthcare expert, with detailed knowledge of this very technical sector.
