Combination brings together two established accountancy and advisory businesses, strengthening specialist expertise and creating new opportunities for clients and employees
Burgess Hodgson has announced that Chavereys, the specialist accountancy and advisory practice with offices in Faversham and Stamford, is joining the Burgess Hodgson Group, marking a significant milestone in the firm’s long-term growth strategy.
The combination will create a professional services group with turnover of £40 million and a team of 300, bringing together two businesses with a shared commitment to personal, relationship-led advice and a relentless focus on client service and quality.
Chavereys has built a reputation for its specialist work with rural businesses, farms, estates, food producers, renewable energy businesses and private clients. That expertise will sit alongside Burgess Hodgson’s accountancy, tax, audit and advisory services, giving clients of both firms access to a wider range of specialist advice.
Central to the decision to join forces is a shared approach to how the combined business should grow. Both firms believe that increasing scale should strengthen the relationships clients value, giving them access to a broader range of expertise while preserving the personal service and continuity on which both businesses have been built. The partnership also builds on long-standing relationships between the leadership teams. That familiarity, and a shared understanding of how clients should be supported, has helped establish a strong foundation for the businesses to come together.
Richard Stewart, Chief Executive of Burgess Hodgson, said: “Chavereys is an exceptional business, with talented people, long–standing client relationships and a culture that closely reflects our own. We’ve always been clear that growth needs to be about more than simply getting bigger. It’s about bringing the right people together, strengthening what we can offer clients and building a business that everyone involved is proud to be part of.
“Our ambition is to become the UK’s most trusted professional services firm serving the mid-market, and welcoming Chavereys into the group is an important step towards achieving that. We’re delighted to be joining forces and look forward to what we can achieve together.”
Nick Holmes, CEO of Chavereys, said: “Both businesses share a fundamental belief that great advice starts with understanding clients, their businesses and their ambitions. We’ve built Chavereys around those relationships, and it was important to us that any decision about our future would protect and strengthen that approach.
“In Burgess Hodgson, we have a team that shares those values and our ambition for what a modern professional services business can become. Together, we have an opportunity to offer clients greater depth and breadth of expertise while retaining the personal relationships that matter most to them.
“We’re particularly excited about contributing to the development of Burgess Hodgson’s talent academy. We want to prepare our people for the real business world, combining technical expertise with practical experience, commercial judgement and the confidence to work directly with clients. It’s about developing advisers who can think independently, build relationships and deliver genuinely valuable advice.”
Cultural alignment remains central to that approach, with the group focused on bringing together businesses that share its commitment to clients, people and long-term relationships.
Matthew Sutton, Chief Growth Officer at Burgess Hodgson, added: “We’re building a business, not simply a platform. That means working with people who share our ambitions and who want to play an active role in shaping what comes next. Chavereys brings exactly that. There is a strong alignment between our teams, not just in the services we provide, but in how we believe clients should be looked after. We see this as an opportunity to build something together, combining traditional service-led values with the technology, specialist expertise and resources needed for the future.”
Burgess Hodgson was advised on the transaction by Continuum Advisory Partners, Hill Dickinson and PwC. Chavereys was advised by Stephenson Harwood.
The group will continue to pursue opportunities for further expansion, with a focus on strengthening new capabilities in HR advisory, Capital Allowances, R&D and Corporate Governance, whilst investing in its people and providing clients with access to a wider range of specialist advice.
